Material facts

What Is Pearl?

Material status

Most pearls used in modern jewelry are cultured. Shell pearls and imitation pearls can also create a pearl-like look, but they differ from nacre-grown cultured pearls in material, value, durability and care.

Pearl is an organic gem material formed inside mollusks. Instead of being cut from a mineral crystal, pearl grows layer by layer as nacre forms around an internal nucleus or irritant.

Most pearls used in modern jewelry are cultured. This means the pearl formation process is started with human help, but the nacre still grows inside the mollusk. Cultured pearls can be natural in material while still being cultivated through human intervention.

Pearl jewelry can also include shell pearls, glass-based imitation pearls and other pearl-like materials. These can be visually attractive and useful in jewelry design, but they are not the same material as nacre-grown cultured pearls. The type of pearl affects the look, value, care and long-term wear of the piece.

Meaning & Symbolism

What Pearl Symbolizes

Pearl is traditionally associated with wisdom, purity, feminine grace and calm elegance. Unlike faceted gemstones that are valued for sharp brilliance, pearl is appreciated for its soft luster and quiet visual depth.

In jewelry, pearl often gives a piece a refined, timeless and organic character. It can feel classic, romantic, bridal, minimalist or artistic depending on the setting, metal and overall design.

These meanings are symbolic and cultural associations, not promises of physical, medical or guaranteed effects.

Material variations

Pearl Varieties

Freshwater Pearl

Freshwater pearls are widely used in jewelry and can appear in many shapes, sizes and tones. They are often appreciated for their soft luster, organic forms and versatility.

Akoya Pearl

Akoya pearls are known for a classic round appearance and refined luster. They are often associated with traditional pearl strands and elegant pearl jewelry.

Tahitian Pearl

Tahitian pearls are cultured pearls known for darker tones, including gray, green, blue, purple and peacock-like overtones. They can give pearl jewelry a more dramatic and modern character.

South Sea Pearl

South Sea pearls are valued for larger sizes and a luxurious satin-like luster. They are often associated with white, cream and golden tones.

Baroque Pearl

Baroque pearls have irregular organic shapes. They are useful in more artistic, sculptural and handmade jewelry because each pearl can feel visibly unique.

Shell Pearl / Imitation Pearl

Shell pearls and imitation pearls are made to create a pearl-like appearance, but they are not the same as nacre-grown cultured pearls. They can still be beautiful in jewelry, especially when the design focuses on soft luster and shape, but their material, value and care needs are different.

Durability

Durability & Wearability

Pearl is more delicate than many common jewelry stones. Its Mohs hardness is usually around 2.5–4.5, which means it can scratch more easily than quartz, sapphire, ruby or diamond.

Pearl is best suited to jewelry that avoids heavy impact: earrings, necklaces, pendants, brooches and carefully worn bracelets. Pearl rings can be beautiful, but they need more caution because rings are exposed to more knocks, abrasion and contact with hard surfaces.

For everyday wear, pearl works best when the setting protects it and when the wearer avoids chemicals, rough storage and aggressive cleaning. It is a material for careful, conscious wear rather than careless handling.

Wear notes

Pearls are soft and sensitive to perfume, cosmetics, acids, ultrasonic cleaning and steam.

Care guide

How to Care for Pearl Jewelry

Wipe pearl jewelry gently with a soft damp cloth after wearing. This helps remove skin oils, perfume residue and cosmetics before they sit on the pearl surface.

Avoid exposing pearls to perfume, hairspray, lotions, acids, household cleaners and harsh jewelry cleaning solutions. These can damage the surface or reduce the pearl’s luster over time.

Do not clean pearl jewelry with ultrasonic cleaners or steam cleaners. Pearls are organic and delicate, and aggressive cleaning methods can cause damage.

Store pearls separately from harder gemstones and metal pieces that can scratch them. A soft pouch or lined jewelry box is better than loose storage with other jewelry.

Pearls should not be kept in overly dry conditions for long periods. They are organic gem materials and benefit from careful storage rather than harsh heat, dryness or chemical exposure.

In jewelry

Jewelry with Pearl

Pearl works beautifully in jewelry that focuses on soft glow, organic texture and quiet refinement. It can make a design feel classic, romantic, sculptural or modern depending on the metal, silhouette and setting.

In our jewelry, pearl is best treated as a visual center of softness rather than a hard sparkling accent. It is especially effective in earrings, necklaces, pendants and carefully designed bracelets where the pearl’s luster can remain visible and protected.
