Each of these two-tone hoop earrings ends in a carved citrine drop. The hoop is long and narrow rather than round: a plain sterling silver wire runs down the back, and the front is a chain of three rectangular links joined by short bars. The top and bottom links are gold plated and the middle one is bright white, so yellow and white alternate down the hoop. From a small silver loop at its base an oval citrine dangles and swings as you turn your head.

The citrine is natural and untreated, a clear golden-yellow oval carved all over with deep grooves that cross in different directions. Where a faceted stone would throw back sharp flashes, this one shows the lines of its carving. Its effect is aventurescence. Citrine is the November birthstone, so these citrine earrings carry the stone of anyone born in that month.

We make this pair in our workshop in Türkiye from 925 sterling silver, plated in rhodium and in gold. Gold-plated sterling silver is silver with a fine layer of gold over it; here the gold covers two links on each hoop, and rhodium keeps the white metal bright and slows tarnish. The pair weighs about 5 grams.

The design lives in the hoop itself. The front of a chain hoop is built from links in two metals, and instead of a cut gem it carries a carved stone, which makes these unique earrings: a link hoop above, a textured stone below. As mixed metal earrings they sit as easily next to a gold ring as next to a silver bracelet, because each earring already shows both tones. The size of the carved citrine against the slim links makes them statement earrings for an open neckline or hair worn up, and a considered gift for a November birthday.
